Importing surveys from Kobo

Importing Surveys from Kobo Toolbox
If you need to bring in survey designs or survey data from Kobo Toolbox into mWater, you can do it in a few simple steps as outlined in this guide.

Importing Survey Designs

Kobo: Select Form -> More Actions -> Download as XLS
Kobo: Select Form -> More Actions -> Download as XLS
The steps to export survey designs from Kobo and bring them in into mWater are as follows:

1. Login to your Kobo account and select the form you want to export.
2. Click the More Actions icon (three dots) and Select the Download as XLS option from the dropdown menu.
3. Go to the Surveys page in mWater, select Survey Design Import and then Import XLS Form.
4. Add the XLS file to the import section.

This imports the design and creates a draft survey which you can double-check and edit. Once you've verified the draft, you can save it. This turns the draft into a regular mWater survey.
Note that if you close the page before saving the draft, the survey won't be saved.

More information about the survey design import can be found here.

Importing Survey Data

Whether you design a survey directly in mWater or import a design from elsewhere, you can then import existing survey data into that survey. Here we'll cover how to export survey data from Kobo and import it into the survey design on the mWater-side.
First we want to export data out of Kobo, match it into the mWater import template format, and then import the data into a deployment.
Exporting the data:
1. Open the survey in Kobo.
2. Select Downloads in the Data section on the bottom right.
3. Export as XLS

Importing into mWater
1. Go to the survey in mWater.
2. Download an import template from the Responses-tab by selecting Import Responses.
3. Copy over the data from the Kobo spreadsheet into the import template, making sure the columns line up.
4. Make sure your survey has at least one active Deployment.
5. Import the template into the deployment using the Import Responses popup in step 2.
Things to look out for when copying over data:
- Kobo metadata like start and end time can't be brought over by default, but you can make specific questions for them.
- Responses to multi-choice fields can be copied over into one cell. For example, 'January February March' would include all three options if you put them in a cell.
- If you're unsure about the exact formatting of the data, you can fill out a form manually in mWater, then export that data and see how it is formatted to get an idea.
