How do you import existing GIS asset data instead of mapping it again?
Use the asset import templates in the Portal and map your spreadsheet columns onto them. Points can be given as latitude and longitude, while lines and polygons such as pipelines and service zones have to be supplied as WKT.
Utilities and districts usually hold something already: a consultant's shapefile, an old asset register, a GPS export. Remapping it in the field costs months and discards the history attached to it. Importing is mostly a data preparation job, and the part that reliably trips people up is the geometry format rather than the upload itself.
How to do it
Download the import template for the asset type you are loading, such as sources, pipelines, meters, pumps or valves.
Decide the geometry for each type: latitude and longitude for points, WKT for lines and polygons.
Prepare the file in Excel, matching your columns to the template.
Map the columns during import in the Portal and check the preview before committing.
Spot-check the imported assets on the map against a source you trust.
