How do you map the individual pipes in a water network?

Draw them as line assets on the water system, in the Surveyor app or in the Portal, or import the pipe data you already hold. Once pipes carry attributes such as diameter, material and age, they support analysis rather than only appearing on a map.

Why this matters

A pipe drawn on a map is worth very little by itself. A pipe with a diameter, a material and an installation date is what lets a utility argue where non-revenue water is being lost, plan replacement by age rather than by complaint, and cost a rehabilitation honestly. Most utilities already hold some of this in a GIS file and can import it instead of resurveying.

How to do it

  1. Add pipes to the water system, drawing them in the Surveyor app or on the map in the Portal.
  2. Fill in the attributes that drive analysis, such as diameter, material and installation date.
  3. Import existing pipe data from your GIS rather than redrawing what you already have.
  4. Check how the network renders in the Portal and close the obvious gaps in connectivity.
  5. Use the resulting asset data for non-revenue water analysis and replacement planning.
