How do you build a dashboard from your monitoring data?

Add widgets to a dashboard, point each at a data source, and set the expression it should show. Charts, maps, tables and text live on the same page, and filters let one dashboard serve every district instead of needing one per district.

Why this matters

A dashboard is worth building only if a specific person will make a specific decision from it, and that is the part most often skipped. Dashboards built to show everything get consulted once. The useful discipline is to name the decision first, then add only the widgets that inform it, and to use filters so the same page answers the question for whoever is looking.

How to do it

  1. Decide who the dashboard is for and what decision it should support.
  2. Create the dashboard and add your first widget, choosing the chart, map or table that fits the question.
  3. Set the data source and the expression for each widget, which is where the actual analysis happens.
  4. Add filters so a viewer can narrow to their district, period or programme.
  5. Add text widgets to explain what the numbers mean, so the page stands on its own.
  6. Share it with the people who need it, using organization branches rather than individual names.
  7. Check it on a phone if field staff will use it.
